Karna had three major curses: 1) His teacher Parashurama cursed him to forget his mantras when he needed them most (for lying about his caste). 2) A Brahmin cursed him that his chariot wheel would get stuck in the earth (for killing a calf). 3) Mother Earth was angry with him.
Technically, it was against the rules. However, Krishna argued that Karna had supported the unfair killing of Abhimanyu and the disrobing of Draupadi. Since Karna had abandoned Dharma throughout his life, he had no right to claim the protection of Dharma at the end.
Both Krishna and Kunti told Karna that he was the eldest Pandava before the war. They tried to persuade him to switch sides, but Karna remained loyal to Duryodhana out of friendship and gratitude.
