Drona Vadha
The master falls. To defeat the invincible Drona, the Pandavas use a strategic half-truth about the death of an elephant named Ashwatthama. Drona lays down his arms and is killed.
The war continues into the night, breaking all rules. Ghatotkacha, Bhima's demon son, wreaks havoc. Karna is forced to use his one-time divine weapon to kill Ghatotkacha, saving Arjuna. Deception is then used to dishearten Drona, leading to his death.
Common questions and insights about this chapter
Ghatotkacha was the son of Bhima and the demoness Hidimbi. As a half-demon, he possessed magical powers and immense strength, which increased during the night.
Karna had saved a divine weapon (Vasavi Shakti) given by Indra solely to kill Arjuna. However, Ghatotkacha was destroying the Kaurava army at night so effectively that Duryodhana pleaded with Karna to save them. Karna was forced to use the weapon on Ghatotkacha.
Knowing Drona would not stop fighting as long as he held weapons, Krishna advised a plan. Bhima killed an elephant named Ashwatthama and shouted 'Ashwatthama is dead!'. When Drona asked Yudhishthira (who never lied) for confirmation, Yudhishthira said 'Ashwatthama is dead (the elephant)'. Drona dropped his weapons in grief and was beheaded by Dhrishtadyumna.
